The latest work of the stage version of the “Blue Rock” series, which started in May 2023, “Blue Rock – EPISODE Nagi -” will open on November 20, 2025 (Thursday) at Tokyo Dome City Theater G Rosso!
The official report of the public general event and interview held prior to the first day has arrived.
Public Gene Pro & Interview Official Report
The first thing that strikes you when you enter the theater is the set. It has a total of three tiers, including two tiers and an overhead passageway, making full use of the height difference and space of Theater G Rosso.
As you can see from the time axis, we have returned from the grass pitch of the 4th STAGE to the “Blue Prison” (Blue Rock), with no green surface and an inorganic space. Another major feature is that there is a slope that is similar to a slide that goes far past the greengrocer's (sloped stage floor), and a parkour-like set can be seen on the second level.
Previous series have also used the greengrocer's store setting to create realistic and powerful match scenes, and you'll definitely be excited to see how they'll use this.
The story is carefully drawn from the encounter between Nagi and Reio. Until now, Nagi has lived a troublesome life without getting excited about anything, but when Reio discovers her and starts playing soccer, how will she achieve rapid growth? The story progresses at a good pace, with developments reminiscent of scenes and lines from the main story “Blue Rock'' and the stage version, and important scenes that I don't want to leave out.
The screenplay and direction are written and directed by Naohiro Ise, who is also in charge of the screenplay and direction for the stage play “Blue Rock'' series, which has created a careful story development that does not feel like a digest, even though it is packed with 8 volumes of the original work. It conveys the building of the relationship between Nagi and Reio, their misunderstandings, changes, and their respective growth.
In terms of “relationships,” I would like you to pay particular attention to the two combinations that exist and are compared to the combination of Nagi and Reio: Kiyoshi Seiichi and Haraku Kai, and Karasu Tabito and Otoya Kageta. I would like you to see how Nagi, who meets these two couples, reflects on the relationship and the way she and Reio are.
In the match scene, the aforementioned slope and parkour set that uses horizontal bars etc. are very useful. Using these, it is now possible to express movements and a sense of speed that humans would normally not be able to achieve by simply running or flying on their own. The two-dimensional expression created by combining the visuals, special effects, and sound effects that have evolved throughout the series makes it feel like the world of manga and anime has appeared before your eyes.
The seats are also typical of Theater G Rosso, with large steps, making it easy to see point differences and monologues projected onto the floor, slope, and third tier.
The carefully scripted Nagi and Reio are played by Takamichi Sato and Shuji Kikuchi, who reprise their roles from the stage play “Blue Rock'' series.
Sato does an excellent job portraying Nagi's growth, which is troublesome but seems like she's walking around wearing clothes. In the beginning, Nagi's entire aura, starting from her facial expressions, had a “troublesome'' color to her, but as she encounters various people and events, it takes my breath away to see her change so rapidly. Sato's natural “two-dimensional” color, combined with the actions that physically embody it, make you feel that this is how the genius Seishiro Nagi would move if he actually existed.
Kikuchi portrays Reio's inner life, which completely changes from the time when everything was going well, such as the sparkling feeling he had when he found Nagi, his confidence, and his hope, with such poignancy and passion that it becomes painful for the viewer. Reio is someone who has overcome this hardship and experienced various things, but I can't help but want to help him.
In addition to characters continuing from the series, new characters also appear. Please look forward to seeing how they will affect Nagi and Reio, and how they will be involved in the story.
Since it is a spin-off, this work depicts the main story from a different perspective. Scenes that were not depicted in the stage play “Blue Rock'' series and scenes that were depicted are combined, and after watching the play, you will want to go back and watch the entire original work and the stage footage. And there is no doubt that you will love Nagi and Reio even more.
A boxed interview was held before the production, with Takamichi Sato, who played Seishiro Nagi, and Shuji Kikuchi, who played Reio Mikage, in attendance.
–The first day is finally here. Please tell me how you feel now.
Takamichi Sato (as Seishiro Nagi):When I came across the original “Blue Rock'' and “Episode Nagi'', I got goosebumps from how passionate they were. And since I'm someone who likes to stand out, I thought, “I want to be in this work and be the center of the story!'' (laughs)
This work, which I had always thought of, has now been adapted into a stage play, and it is finally opening. During the rehearsal period, I felt that Nagi changed as she met many egoists. I think even more new scenery awaits us as we approach the first day.
I'm looking forward to diving into the world of “Episode Nagi'' with Shuji-kun and the rest of the company, meeting a lot of egoists and various things just like Nagi, and feeling a lot of different feelings myself.
Shuji Kikuchi (as Reio Mikage):It was an intense rehearsal period. There are so many roles that I don't even have time to go to the wings (lol). I feel excited that I can finally deliver this work because I have been practicing so intensively.
I believe this work is filled with things that everyone who supports us would want to see. I want to show it to everyone as soon as possible, and I want to know what you think! I feel like a boy.
It's a work that I have a lot of feelings for, so I want everyone at the company to do our best to deliver it.
——This work is a spin-off stage adaptation starring the characters Nagi and Reio from “Blue Rock.'' Did you discover anything new after playing Nagi and Reio again?
Kikuchi:I once again realized that these two people had such a strong connection. I was able to experience the joy of portraying Reio and Nagi's feelings for each other.
In the previous stage play “Blue Rock'' series, I had played the role of Reio in my own way, but in “Episode Nagi'' I discovered that there was still more depth to the role. I wish I could express that better.
Sato:I learned a lot about Nagi and Reio, their feelings, and a new side of Nagi. That's what I was thinking here, or why I was making such an expression. I think I'll get expressions and feelings that I've never thought of in my previous roles.
I thought that Nagi was a person with more emotions and expressions than my first impression. It's very human. This is especially true when talking to King Rei.
——Nagi is said to be a genius, but were there any instances during rehearsals when you or your partner thought you were a genius?
Kikuchi:Like an egoist, let's play it safe and talk about our own genius story instead of the other person's story (lol)! I am a genius who is loved by the company. Everyone loves me.
Although it is a series, we are a very close company. I thought that I was a genius who could be loved because I could be the number one star in the center! (lol).
Sato:I think the same thing will happen to me (lol). When I was changing there earlier, Ryo Saeki, who plays the role of Shrigiri Hyouma, said to me, “Because Takamichi is here, everyone can do their best.'' When I heard that, I thought that a genius is someone who is said to be someone like that, so I wonder if I have come close to that. Embarrassing! (lol)
——What kind of actors do you see each other as?
Sato:He's a hot guy. Even when it's not his turn, he's always looking out for others. He called me at night and said, “I noticed something while practicing,'' and we talked a lot. That moment in particular was important to me, and hearing that from Shuji-kun made me feel like things went up a notch the next day.
I think that during rehearsals, there are all sorts of treasures lying around, and the task is to find them. Shuji-kun is the kind of person who can find that. He's like a treasure hunter.
Kikuchi:That's a famous quote! Takamichi is a person whose passion for this work is stronger than most. I'm the first to arrive at the rehearsal hall and the last to leave. Takamichi works harder than anyone else, single-mindedly climbing the stairs one step at a time…I've seen him do that up close, so I thought this would be a wonderful work.
——Please tell us the highlights of this work.
Kikuchi:It's the hot connection and line between Nagi and Reio. I felt that strongly when I was acting. Although it is depicted from a different perspective than the main story “Blue Rock'', there are elements scattered throughout that make you want to see it from a different perspective. We have carefully created the relationship between Nagi and Reio, so I hope you can see that.
Then, Nagi's growth. The range of growth from the beginning to the end is amazing. As Reio, I often feel a little lonely and sad, but I hope as many people as possible can enjoy the beauty of Nagi's growth.
Sato:As you can see, the set has changed significantly this time. I want you to feel the passion as they struggle desperately, sweat, run around, and perform on this field.
Since it's “Episode Nagi'', there are many scenes from Nagi and Reio's point of view, but there are also scenes where you can get a glimpse of the pasts of other characters. Each of them has their own past stories and episodes, so I hope you will pay attention to that as well.
This time, Masahide Funaki created some really cool staging. Immediately after the 4th STAGE of “Blue Rock'' ended, I contacted Mr. Funaki and asked him, “I would like to modify my body so that I can improve the quality of my actions.'' I decided to become Nagi's apprentice because I thought that in order to express Nagi's genius physical abilities, I had to fundamentally change my body. Be sure to pay attention to the actions you take with your body.
——Finally, please tell us your enthusiasm for this work.
Kikuchi:Since the day “Blue Rock'' was made into a stage play, I have been dreaming of my favorite “EPISODE Nagi'' being made into a stage play. It's finally opening. I'm glad that we were able to complete this project with the support of our fans, staff, and many other people.
I will put my heart and soul into the role of Reio Mikage and his partner Seishiro Nagi, which I have played up until now. In order to leave a lasting impression on everyone's hearts about the unique relationship between the two of us, I would like to carefully deliver the play while enjoying it up until the final stage. Please come to the theater with a sense of fun and excitement in your heart. I hope people come to see my buddy Nagi's cool back. We will show you the best and happy stage!
Sato:Finally, everyone can begin Nagi's story together on stage, called “EPISODE Nagi''. I don't think I could have come this far without the help and support of so many people. I want to firmly use my thoughts as my strength, fight against egoists every day, grow together with Reio as Rei's partner, and work hard to create a wonderful work. Thank you for your warm, enthusiastic and egotistical support until the end!
