Capcom prohibits obscene and commercial use content in its fanworks guide


Capcom published the November 4 its official document titled “Capcom Fan Content Guidelines”with the goal of establishing clear rules for derivative works created by fans. These rules apply to illustrations, manga, novels, figures, music, cosplay, videos and games inspired by the company's franchises. According to the company, the guidelines seek to promote user creativity without allowing abuse or misuse of its intellectual property.

The main guideline states that all fan content must clearly indicate that it is based on a Capcom property and avoid any confusion with the official material. Furthermore, it is prohibited direct reproduction of company material (such as trailers or video game clips), which must instead conform to the Video Guidelines already existing.

Restrictions on commercial and thematic content

Derivative works They may not be used for commercial purposesexcept in specific cases such as fanzines or doujinshi limited circulation and sale at low cost. Capcom will decide on a case-by-case basis whether the project is considered a “hobby” work or a commercial activity, although it did not define specific numbers of copies or prices. As for 3D figures or kits, their sale will only be allowed at events with official license of the company, such as Wonder Festival.

Content Bans and Possible Sanctions

The guide also prohibits expressions of obscene, sexual, discriminatory or defamatory natureas well as works that may damage the company's reputation. Likewise, titles that include intellectual properties of third parties or external collaborations. In the event of non-compliance, Capcom may request the removal of the material or take legal action in situations of malicious use of its franchises.
