About the anime adaptation of the “Fate” series

The “Fate'' series is a group of various works centered on the legendary action drama visual novel “Fate/stay night'' released on PC in 2004 by TYPE-MOON, which was commercialized from a doujin circle. The general synopsis is that the story depicts the “Holy Grail War,'' in which magicians (masters) summon mythological and historical figures as servants and kill each other over the “Holy Grail,'' which grants wishes.
In addition to “Fate/stay night'', there are various works such as “Fate/EXTRA'' which depicts the Holy Grail War on the moon with a different world view from “Fate/stay night'', “Fate/Zero'' which depicts the Fourth Holy Grail War by Nitroplus scenario writer Gen Urobuchi, and “Fate/Apocrypha'' by Yuichiro Higashide which depicts the Holy Grail War divided into two factions, red and black.
Other unusual works include “Today's Meals for the Emiya Family,'' a short spin-off that focuses on cooking featuring characters from “Fate/stay night,'' and “Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya,'' a magical girl story centered around Illyasviel von Einzbern, drawn by Hiroshi Hiroyama.
In addition, the animated works of the popular Android/iOS game “Fate/Grand Order” include “Fate/Grand Order the Movie – Camelot – Part 1 Wandering; Agateram” & “Fate/Grand Order the Movie – Camelot – Part 2 Paladin; Agateram”, the TV anime “Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia”, and the anime “Fate/Grand Order” -Final Singularity Coronation Time Temple Solomon-'' and others.
Below, we will introduce the order in which you can watch the series.
Summary of viewing order of anime “Fate/stay night”
After all, it would be best to start with “Fate/stay night,'' which is the origin and original source of the series.
Examples of animated works include “Fate/stay night'' (2006 version), produced by Studio Deen based on the route[Fate]in which Saber is the heroine in the original game, and “Fate/stay night – UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS'', a movie version of Rin Tohsaka's route (Unlimited Blade Works), also produced by Studio Deen.
There is also the TV anime “Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works)'' produced by ufotable, which follows Rin Tohsaka's route, and the theatrical trilogy “Fate/stay night (Heaven's Feel)'', which follows Sakura Matou's route (Heaven's Feel).
The recommended order to watch is “Fate/stay night'' (2006 version), which follows the order of play in the original game, the TV anime “Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works)'' or the movie version “Fate/stay night – UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS'', and the movie “Fate/stay night (Heaven's Feel)'' trilogy.
“Fate/stay night'' (2006 edition) also has a compilation edition “Fate/stay night reproduction'', so it might be a good idea to get a general idea of the flow.
Also, the movie version of “Fate/stay night – UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS'' has the aspect of being a digest that combines a large volume of stories into one movie, so if you have time, the TV anime “Fate/stay night (Unlimited Blade Works)'' is a better way to enjoy the story from beginning to end. I think the movie version of “Fate/stay night – UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS” is perfect for when you want to quickly understand or look back on the story of Rin Tohsaka's route.
Series recommended viewing order
There's no point in making a headline like “Recommended viewing order for the series,'' but to be honest, I don't have much to say other than to follow each series in chronological order.
“Fate/stay night'', which is the origin and source material of the series, and “Fate/Zero'', which can be said to be a prequel to “Fate/stay night'', although there are some differences, are perfect for beginners, but basically it doesn't matter which series you start watching.
For example, it would be fun to start with a series that features characters you liked after playing “Fate/Grand Order,'' or a series that features heartwarming everyday stories without brutal battles. Please feel free to browse through the series that feature your favorite characters or historical figures.
Therefore, below we will briefly introduce the chronology of each series and the key points of the works that you should be aware of when watching.

There is no order in which you can view these works; you can view them in any order.
If there is a character you like, you can watch it before watching “Fate/stay night'' or “Fate/Zero,'' with just the basic element of a master and servant teaming up and fighting against other teams over the “Holy Grail.''
However, there are some elements in “Fate/EXTRA Last Encore” that are difficult to understand if you only watch the anime, so we recommend playing the game version yourself or researching the worldview of the Holy Grail War on the Moon through other mixed media works before watching.

*From “Fate/Grand Order -First Order-” onwards, the story jumps to Part 1, Chapter 6 of the original game, so if you haven't played the “Fate/Grand Order” game on your smartphone, you can enjoy it even more by supplementing the story up to that point with other mixed media works.
Other related works
These works are all easy to enjoy, so as long as you have a certain level of understanding of the world and characters, you can start reading them anywhere.
However, “Carnival Phantasm'' features characters from “Fate/hollow ataraxia,'' which has not been made into an anime, as well as TYPE-MOON characters from outside the “Fate'' series, such as “Tsukihime'' and “MELTY BLOOD.'' You can enjoy it even if you don't know them, but it's definitely more fun if you know them.

“Fate/Zero”
“Fate/Zero'' is a story about Kiritsugu Emiya, Shirou Emiya's adoptive father, as the main character, and depicts the Fourth Holy Grail War, which occurred 10 years before “Fate/stay night.'' It's a prequel to “Fate/stay night,” so it might be a good idea to check it out before watching “Fate/stay night.”
However, there are some small differences between the Fourth Holy Grail War, which is told in “Fate/stay night,” and “Fate/Zero.” So this time, I recommend checking out “Fate/stay night” first.

Other viewing order of the anime “Fate” series with different worldviews and chronological order
Among the works in the series, there are many works whose history has diverged due to various circumstances and whose settings are different. The origin and original source of the series is “Fate/stay night,'' but as long as you keep the basic element of masters and servants teaming up and fighting against other teams over the “Holy Grail,'' you can watch these works from anywhere.
However, it will be easier to understand “Fate/EXTRA Last Encore'' if you have played the original game, so we recommend that you first play the PSP games “Fate/EXTRA'' and “Fate/EXTRA CCC,'' which depict the Holy Grail War on the Moon. The production of the remake version “Fate/EXTRA Record'' has also been announced, so if you want to touch on “Fate/EXTRA'' related works from now on, it would be a good idea to wait for this.
『Fate/Apocrypha』
This work is in a parallel world with “Fate/stay night'', and a certain faction in the “Third Holy Grail War'' summons a different servant than the one in the world of “Fate/stay night'', branching into a different history. Another feature is that it depicts the “Holy Grail War” in which 14 Servants are divided into “Red” and “Black” factions and fight, which is a unique highlight of this work.

This work is one of the works related to “Fate/EXTRA”, which depicts the Holy Grail War that takes place in the fictional world of moon spirits “SE.RA.PH”. The production is handled by Shaft, famous for works such as “Monogatari Series'' and “Puella Magi Madoka Magica.'' It has a completely original story that is different from the game, so if you want to try this work, it's a good idea to play the game first. What you should be aware of is that it is divided into “Oblitus Heliocentric Theory'', which covers episodes 1 to 10, and “Illisteria Heliocentric Theory,'' which covers episodes 11 to 13. When watching, please be sure to watch from “Obritus Heliocentrism''.

This work is based on the original work by Ryogo Narita, known for “Baccano!'' and “Durarara!!'', and is set several years after the end of the Fifth Holy Grail War in Japan, and depicts a “fake'' Holy Grail War in which numerous Masters and Servants are mixed up. A TV anime adaptation has already been announced, but the special anime “Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn-'' was released in July last year (2023).
“Fate/strange Fake”
Synopsis
A story of deadly battle and madness in which numerous magicians (Masters) and heroic spirits (Servants) intermingle, unfolding in the United States, the first setting for the Holy Grail War.
The film is produced by A-1 Pictures, who also worked on “Fate/Apocrypha'' in 2017.
Furthermore, the dynamic and bold animation was directed by Shun Enokido and Takahito Sakazume, who have always shown new visual expressions in animation commercials for the app game “Fate/Grand Order” and animation commercials based on original novels.
The end of the “fake” Holy Grail War heralds the dawn of the war.

Viewing order of “Fate/Grand Order” related works
The popular smartphone RPG “Fate/Grand Order” has also been adapted into various animations. The order of viewing is starting with “Fate/Grand Order -First Order-” where you can see the encounter between the main character (Tatsuka Fujimaru) and Mash Kyrielight, followed by “Fate/Grand Order the Movie – Sacred Round Table Realm Camelot” which was released in the first and second parts, TV anime “Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia”, and the theatrical anime “Fate/Grand Order – Final Singularity”. It is recommended to proceed with “Crown Time Temple Solomon-'' and finally “Fate/Grand Order -MOONLIGHT/LOSTROOM-''.
However, if you check the anime, the episodes from chapters 1 to 5 of the first part of the original game are missing. So, if you have the time, you can enjoy it even more by playing the original game or supplementing it with media mix works other than anime, such as comics.
“Fate/Grand Order -First Order-“
Synopsis
Chaldea, the Humanity Continuation Guarantee Agency, is a secret agency established to observe the world that cannot be seen with magic alone or that cannot be measured with science alone, and to prevent the definitive extinction of humanity.
The safety of human history for the next 100 years has been guaranteed through the achievements of many researchers who have gathered together under the noble mission of preserving human history more strongly than anything else.
But.
Without any warning, the future realm that Chaldea had been observing disappeared.
It turns out that humanity will become extinct in 2017—no, it's been proven.
The cause seems to be Fuyuki, a local Japanese city in 2004 AD.
Here, an “unobservable region'' that did not exist before appeared.
Chaldea hypothesizes that this is the cause of human extinction, and investigates and elucidates the singularity.
Or the mission “Searching for the Holy Grail” for the purpose of destruction—Issuing a Grand Order.

Viewing order of other works
In addition to this, there are other works in the “Fate'' series that focus on everyday life, as well as works that focus more on gags and comedies, and we have compiled a list of such works here. There are many works that are fine as long as you know the characters to a certain extent, so it is recommended that you look at the works that feature the characters you like.
“Today's meal for the Emiya family”
A spin-off work based on the theme of “cooking”, which is the special skill of Shiro Emiya, the main character of “Fate/stay night”. The main feature is that the Master and Servants, who were involved in serious battles, are living a peaceful life. Like the main series, ufotable is in charge of production, and the food illustrations are of such a quality that they really make you hungry.
Many of the episodes depicted are heart-warming and heart-warming, but for those who have a fondness for “Fate/stay night,'' it is also a work that will make you cry.[HF]It may incorporate settings that are revealed in the route, so I recommend watching it as a conclusion to works related to “Fate/stay night”.

“Carnival Phantasm”
“Carnival Phantasm” is an OVA produced to commemorate TYPE-MOON's 10th anniversary. Based on the anthology “TAKE MOON'' by Eri Takeri, also known for “Kannagi,'' this is a high-tension gag comedy starring characters who have appeared in works such as “Tsukihime'' and “Fate/stay night.'' The director is Seiji Kishi, who has directed such masterpiece comedies as “Seto no Hanayome'' and “Celestial Warrior Sunred,'' and his sense of style is on full display in this work.
If anything, it's a work aimed at core TYPE-MOON fans, but the fast-paced gag after gag will definitely make you laugh even if you only know “Fate/stay night.'' It is also the work that gave rise to the legendary joke, “Lancer is dead!'', which is still loved by fans today.
In addition, the Blu-ray of “Carnival Phantasm 3rd Season” includes a short video of “Fate/Prototype” as a bonus. Although it is now quite difficult to obtain a new version and viewing options are limited, it is a work that can be said to be the prototype for “Fate/stay night'', which is based on an unpublished novel by the original author of the series, Kinoko Nasu. Please take a look if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one.

“You can understand with manga! Fate/Grand Order”
The web manga “Understand with Manga!” is currently being serialized on the “Fate/Grand Order” official website. Fate/Grand Order” is visualized as a short animation. It has a style that is by far the most outlandish among the many visual adaptations of the Fate series, and its appeal is the number of plot points and surreal gags that you can't help but empathize with while playing FGO. Although the title says “Understand through manga,'' it is extremely dangerous (?) to try to gain knowledge about the “Fate'' series by watching this work.
A variety of Servants from the Fate series appear, but most of them are on the verge of breaking down, and knowing how they look in the serious main story makes the gaps even more hilarious. If you are an “FGO” player with prior knowledge of Servants, there is no problem watching it at any time, but if you are only following the video works, we recommend watching as many series works as possible before viewing. Currently, anyone can watch it on the official FGO channel on You Tube.
“Gudaguda order”
This work was aired on the “Fate Project New Year's Eve TV Special First & Next Order” at the end of 2016, based on the official support manga “Fate/Grand Order”, “Fate/Gudaguda Order”. You can still watch it on YouTube's “Fate/Grand Order Channel”, so please take a look.

Movie version “Kara no Kyoukai Chapter 4 Garan no Cave”
Synopsis
Two years have passed since the unexpected accident.
Both rituals, which continued to sleep in a stupor, were constantly in touch with “death”. And at the same time, I was afraid.
Eventually I woke up.
However, what awaited her was deep loneliness and an unexpected landscape.
What I lost was Ori, the other half who was always with me in the same vessel.
What he has acquired is the strange power “Evil Eye of Direct Death'' that allows him to see the line of death in all things.
Both were the result of retribution for what the Ryogi family was unaware of and had done to arrive at the existence of the ceremony.
Ori loved to dream.
Ori has a deep murderous urge.
He's nowhere to be found now.
The girl becomes paralyzed by the indescribable feeling of loss and death.
Without realizing that it would become the perfect target for spirits seeking a vessel.
There was a boy watching over such a girl. Or should I say young man? His name is Mikiya Kurogiri.
His boss at work is a beautiful woman who is a puppeteer and a magician, but now she is just the owner of a workshop called Garanodo. Her name is Touko Aozaki.
One day, Touko goes to see Shiki. I'm glad I didn't know what it was called.
Maybe a counselor. For some reason, I decided to meet him, and that was Enishi.
At first glance, time seems to pass slowly. But the end will come.
One night, a spirit comes to attack Garandou in the form of flesh, seeking his vessel.
For a moment, what she sees is a line that presides over a ferocious yet calm death. A knife in his hand. Sparkling eyes.
Thus, the girl decides to start walking on her own limbs.
