Television station employee arrested in Japan for stealing anime figures


An unusual case recently shook Japan: a TBS station employee was arrested in Tokyo after being accused of stealing anime figures and other collectible items. The incident generated surprise among fans, given that the products disappeared directly from the facilities of one of the most important television networks in the country.

The suspect was identified as Ryoji Hayashi35 years old, employee of TBS Sparkle, a subsidiary of the TBS group. According to the police, between April and May of this year he stole at least three figures and related merchandise. Security cameras recorded him handling cardboard boxes containing the products.

Sale of products in Akihabara

According to the investigation, Hayashi took the stolen items to Akihabarathe most recognized district in Tokyo for its Japanese pop culture stores, where he sold them. During the interrogation, he acknowledged his guilt with the phrase: “There is no doubt that I stole.” He also admitted that he may have committed other robberies using the same method.

Company response and impact

The TBS Sparkle company issued an official statement in which it regretted what happened: “It is deeply regrettable that one of our employees has been arrested. We will clarify the facts and take the appropriate measures.”

Speculation arose among followers of otaku culture about the figures involved, and some suggest that they could belong to popular franchises such as Gotoubun no Hanayome either Jujutsu Kaisenwidely distributed series with a large volume of merchandise available.
