After more than a year of silence since its announcement in January 2023, it has finally been revealed that the long-awaited sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun will be presented in the form of a film saga. The first part, titled Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening of the Mystery), is scheduled to premiere at some point in 2026.
The study Kinema Citrus returns for production, maintaining the original creative team: Masayuki Kojima in the direction, Hideyuki Kurata as a screenwriter, and the character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda. The main cast will also return to give life to the beloved characters of the series.
New faces in an increasingly dark world
Along with the announcement, a promotional image introducing new characters Tepaste and Cravagliwho will play a key role in this new adventure deep in the Abyss.
A symphonic concert to celebrate the return
As part of the celebrations for this important announcement, a Film Concert special that will take place on February 8, 2026 in it Tokyo Nakano ZERO. The event will be attended by the composer Kevin Penkinwho will conduct the orchestra live. The voice actors of the series will also participate and there will be musical performances of Takeshi Saito and KIHOW (from the group MYTH&ROID).
A legacy of darkness and wonder
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun was issued between July 6 and September 28, 2022a direct sequel to the 2017 first season, critically acclaimed for its intense atmosphere and detailed animation. The second season continued the journey of Riko, Reg and Nanachi into the deepest levels of the Abyss, facing unimaginable horrors and ancient secrets that no one has lived to tell.
With this new film saga, the universe of Made in Abyss expands once again, promising to take viewers into an even deeper, more emotional and disturbing story.
