Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc dethrones Kimetsu no Yaiba in its Japanese premiere


Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc debuted strongly at the Japanese box office, reaching first place in its opening weekend. The film raised 1,251 million yen (approx. 8.45 million dollars) with the sale of more than 807,000 tickets, according to the distributor TOHO.

A debut that dethrones Kimetsu no Yaiba

With these figures, the film surpassed Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinite Castle – Akaza Sairaiwhich had been at the top of the Japanese ranking for nine consecutive weeks. The Ufotable feature film was relegated to second place, after selling 390,000 tickets for a total of 645 million yen during the same weekend.

A high caliber starter

On opening Friday, Chainsaw Man – Reze Arc had already marked a strong start with more than 272,000 tickets sold and 420 million yen in revenue. The film is projected in 421 rooms from all over Japan, with special midnight performances in cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Hokkaido. In addition, it has premium formats such as MX4D, 4DX and Dolby Cinema.

Global expectations

TOHO estimates that the film could reach up to 5 billion yen (about 34 million dollars) in its tour of Japanese cinemas. At the international level, Sony Pictures Entertainment will be in charge of global distribution: the premiere in the United States was brought forward to October 24, while in the United Kingdom it will arrive on the 29th of the same month. In more than 80 countries, the launch is scheduled for September 24.
