The enigmatic classic Angel's Egg returns with a 4K trailer

The distributor Tokuma Shoten presented a new trailer for the 4K remastering of Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago), the enigmatic work directed by Mamoru Oshii and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amanooriginally released in 1985.

Screenings at international festivals

The project had its world premiere the past May 20 during the section Cinéma de la Plage of the Cannes Film Festival. Later, the film will be presented at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) within the “Revivals” category, with performances scheduled for the days September 27 and 30as well as the October 4 and 6. It will also be part of the selection of the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, September 18 to 25.

In Spain, the work will reach Sitges International Fantastic Film Festivalwhich will be held from October 9 to 19. Besides, GKIDS confirmed that it will screen the remastering in theaters in North America starting on November 19.

Details on the remastering

The restoration process was carried out from a new scan in 35mmrecovering the characteristic visual atmosphere of Amano and Oshii. The announcement of the remastering was made in May 2024, and the French company Gebeka International acquired international sales rights. In addition, GKIDS will release the film in domestic format.

The importance of Angel's Egg

Released as an OVA in 1985 and produced by Studio DEENthe film has become a cult work for its minimalist narrative and deep symbolic charge. The direction was carried out by Mamoru Oshiiwho also wrote the script in creative collaboration with Yoshitaka Amanoin charge of artistic design. The music was composed by Yoshihiro Kannoadding to the dreamlike atmosphere that characterizes the project.

A long-awaited return

After decades without adequate distribution in the West—where it had only been shown in limited screenings, such as the one held in New York in September 2023 by the Japan Society—, Angel's Egg you will finally receive a new life thanks to this 4K remastering. As part of the dissemination strategy, HBO Max will soon add the film to its catalog in collaboration with GKIDS.
