The new Demon Slayer movie breaks a historical record in Japan


Aniplex announced that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairaithe first installment of the new film trilogy, has sold more than 9.1 million entries and generated 12.87 billion yen (approximately $87.1 million) in his first 10 days on billboard.

The film has established a new record in Japanbecoming the fastest film to surpass the 10 billion yena mark he achieved in just 8 days. With this, it surpasses the legendary Mugen Trainwhich has held that achievement since 2020 and remains the highest-grossing film in the history of Japanese cinema.

A historic opening that leaves Mugen Train behind

Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai has surpassed all previous records in terms of opening:

  • Best opening weekend (comparing four-day versus three-day openings)
  • Best first day: 1,155,637 tickets and 1,646 million yen (about 11.1 million dollars) he July 18
  • Best single day: 1,421,804 entries and more than 2,037 million yen (13.7 million dollars) he July 20

In its first three days, the film sold 3.84 million entries and raised 5,524 million yen (some $37.4 million). With the Japanese holiday of July 21closed the long weekend with 5.16 million entries and 7,315 million yen in total (approximately 49.5 million dollars).

International expansion and more records to break

The film is projected in 443 movie theaters in Japanincluding screens IMAXa record number for the franchise. At the international level, Aniplex plans to take the film to more than 150 countriessurpassing the previous global tour.

In United States and Canadawill be released on September 12 in theaters with premium formats and Japanese versions with English subtitles and English dubbing, thanks to the collaboration between large companies.

Luxury staff and legacy of success

The direction is in charge of Haruo Sotozaki under the seal of ufotablewho is also in charge of the script. In music, Aimer interpret the theme “Taiyō ga Noboranai Sekai” and LiSA come back with “Zankoku no Yoru ni Kagayake”.

The franchise of Demon Slayer began in April 2019 and has continued with multiple television arcs such as Mugen Train Arc (2021), Entertainment District Arc (2021), Swordsmith Village Arc (2023) and the most recent Hashira Training Arc in 2024.

The original manga Koyoharu Gotouge was published between February 2016 and May 2020 in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jumpending with 23 volumes. In July 2024, it was confirmed that it has exceeded the 200 million copies in circulation all over the world.
