Houseki no Kuni continues to add successes, but not a sequel

This weekend, the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Japan (SFWJ) announced that the manga of Haruko IchikawaHouseki no Kuni (Land of the lustrous) ”, Won the Grand Prix at the 45th Nihon Sf Taisho Awards. This work, starring immortal beings made of precious stones, is still a bombing even though it has already ended, but with great irony: Despite all the love and decorations he receives, his anime still does not have a second season.

In addition to ichikawa, Kenrei Miyanishi won the Special Prize for his “Ginga-Fuu Hanzou (Sailing On Galactic Winds) story collection” ”and posthumous awards were also made to big names as the author Kazuo Umezuthe translator Haruya Sumiya and the novelist Hiroshi Yamamotowho left us last year.

The NIHON SF TAISHO Awards celebrate works published between September 2023 and August 2024, are like the Nebula Awards in Japan. The winner of the Grand Prize takes a certificate, a trophy and 1 million yen, while the special prize only comes with a certificate and a trophy. Despite this new achievement, “Houseki no Kuni” is still remembered not only for its success, but also for that eternal wait for a second season that never comes. And although the franchise continues to accumulate mentions, the joke remains the same: when will we see more about anime?

In a mysterious future, crystalline organisms called gems inhabit a world that has been destroyed by six meteorites. Each gem is assigned a role to fight the lunaries, a species that attacks them to destroy their bodies and use them as ornaments. Phosphofilita, also known as Phos, is a young and fragile gem that dreams of helping her friends in the war effort.

Instead, he is ordered to compile an encyclopedia due to his delicate condition. After reluctantly embarking on this task, Phos meets Cinnabar, an intelligent gem that has been relegated to patrol the isolated island at night due to the corrosive poison that creates his body. After seeing how unhappy it is to cinnabar, Phos decides to find a role that both rejected gems can enjoy. Houseki no Kuni follows Phos's efforts to be useful and protect his companions Gems.
