“Musical 'Fragalia Memories' ~Promise of Love~” official rehearsal report

“Fragalia Memories” is a full-fledged fantasy project presented by Sanrio. The second stage adaptation of the musical, “Fragalia Memories'' ~Promise of Love~, will be performed in Hyogo, Tokyo from November 21st (Friday). We will bring you a preview of the rehearsal from the enthusiastic rehearsal room just before the opening of the event.

The entire cast prepares for the rehearsal, checking their lines and choreography. Yuji Hiroi, who played the role of Claude, and Ryo Kitazono, who played the role of Wilmesh, were on standby wearing costume jackets over their rehearsal clothes in preparation for the actual performance. Masami Ito, the director, said, “Let's be conscious of looking at each other. Let's see what comes out of that,'' and rehearsals began.

The opening number instantly transports you to a sparkling world. The bond that had been built up between the cast members since the first episode was already showing through, with the cast calmly responding to an incident where a prop fell during the dance by making eye contact with each other, and smiling when they saw a cast member moving quickly after making a mistake in their standing position.

The story is set in Fragaria World, where anxiety is spreading due to the appearance of mysterious beings called “Seeds”. Claude arrives at the Blue Continent, Kuromi Kingdom, in search of his “own path,” and by chance ends up taking the Kuromi knight exam.

Yuji Hiroi, who plays Claude, uses his natural agility to the fullest to liven up the scenes. You can feel the energy and conflict that comes from harboring resentment toward himself, and you naturally want to root for him as he struggles to become a knight.

Ryo Kitazono, who plays the role of Wilmesh, who is also taking the knighthood exam like Claude, was waiting for his turn while smiling and keeping up the rhythm. With his calm and relaxed demeanor and occasional melancholy expressions, he gives off an atmosphere that is in contrast to Claude.

Claude passed the exam by proxy and spends his days training as a knight apprentice. Someday, Claude will find “his own chivalry,'' and as a “Knight of Fragaria worthy of Kuromi,'' he will perform an investiture ceremony (accolade) in which he pledges his love to Kuromi, the only lord (lord). As Claude trains for his concrete goal, he deepens his interactions with Fragarians from other countries.

Ryosei Tanaka, who plays Kiki's Fragaria and Clark Stella from the Little Twin Stars Kingdom, and Kazuki Shiota, who plays Lala's Fragaria and Lutar Stella, skillfully express their twin-ness by linking the tone of their voices and the way they cross their legs. The complementary relationship between the younger brother Clark Stella, who shows confusion and desperation, and the older brother Luther Stella, who exudes calm and gentleness, is heartwarming.

Although they sometimes show caution due to their loyalty to their lord, what stands out is the transparency of Seiji Shintani, who plays Munna. The words that come straight to you in a clear voice and a pure smile will melt away any tension.

Keisuke Ueda, who plays the genius knight Cielomort, has an overwhelming presence with his impeccable body movements and restrained singing voice. He was able to freely manipulate jazz-style music and exuded a mysterious charm that made it hard to read his true feelings.

The Fragarians of the Blue Continent grow closer to each other through repeated conversations – as the story progresses, we begin to see a slightly more mature relationship between them. Tassum (played by Yuga Iwasaki) and Piquero (played by Toru Isono), Fragaria of the Black Continent, perform a dialogue familiar to fans of the original work. There were scenes where the actors were able to laugh and laugh as they interacted in harmony with each other.

Furthermore, from the Red Continent, Harlit (played by Kaeda Sakayori), Merold (played by Yumeko Ando), Limicha (played by Takuto Omi), and Sana (played by Hikaru Yamano) appear, and a new episode of the journey from the previous work “The Knot of Innocence'' is revealed. In particular, the presence of Merold, who is hailed as the “strongest knight,'' will add depth to the story of the Blue Continent, so please look forward to the performance.

The “Memori-es'' (an ensemble cast that plays a wide range of characters, including seeds, servants, and townspeople) will be a big success this time as well. In the scenes where they appeared as townspeople, Ito instructed them, “I don't want them to do anything special, but to show us the casual 'everyday life' that Fragaria and the others are trying to protect.'' The uniqueness of each country is expressed in detail in the props, and you can't miss every detail.

The heart of this work is the music by Shunsuke Wada, where the sounds guide the emotions and dialogue and weave the story. Throughout the work, various songs are connected like one big song, and motifs that symbolize emotions such as “hesitation,” “conflict,” “wish,” and “resolution” are repeated, and appear in different colors for each scene. Please pay attention to who sings the same melody and what kind of feelings they put into it, and the moment when their separate hearts eventually come together and create harmony.

Although the number of songs has increased from the first edition, many melodies have been carried over. Although the Fragarians from the Red and Blue continents have not met yet, the music teaches them that even though they are far apart, their desire to protect their Lord is the same. On the other hand, it is the “Promise of Love'' version of “For You'' that highlights the uniqueness of the Blue Continent. The twinkling stars and mechanical sounds that symbolize the blue continent are fun.

The more meaning the music has, the more powerful the lines that are not sung. The timing of the intro and the moment when the song breaks have their own intentions, and Ito gives detailed instructions to the stage manager, sound, and video staff. I was once again reminded that a musical is completed when all the elements fit together perfectly.

By the end of rehearsals, the cast members' foreheads were covered in sweat as they worked out a lot. Everyone in the company nodded enthusiastically at Ito's words, “Let's keep getting better each time we practice.'' Expectations were high to see what kind of blue skies would unfold at the end of their journey, which would continue to improve.

The performance will be held at Theater H in Tokyo from November 21st (Friday) to November 30th (Sunday), and at AiiA 2.5 Theater Kobe in Hyogo from December 5th (Friday) to December 7th (Sunday).
